John Pitchford
Business Development Framework Manager
Service Overview
John Pitchford served in the British Army for 24 years as an Infantry Soldier and Senior Non-Commissioned Officer. His military career took him across the globe, with postings in the UK, Germany, Cyprus, Canada, Belize, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Throughout his service, John developed a wealth of operational experience and leadership skills that would later prove invaluable in civilian life.

Inspiration to Join the Army
John’s fascination with the military began in childhood. Growing up on the former RAF Air Station HMS Nuthatch (now Anthorn), and with a father who served in the RAF, he was immersed in military culture from an early age. His interest in shooting as a hobby further fuelled his desire to serve.

Career Highlights and Memorable Moments
One of John’s proudest moments came during his deployment in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Commander’s Coin for his contributions to the Joint Forces at HQ Kabul. This recognition reflected his dedication, professionalism, and impact in a high-pressure operational environment.

Transition to Civilian Life
John’s transition from military to civilian life was relatively smooth. He was ready to leave the Army and approached the change with clear goals and a strong sense of purpose, driven by the desire to support his young family. His mindset and preparation helped him navigate the shift with confidence.

Applying Military Experience in Civilian Work
John’s military background provided him with a wide range of transferable skills, including decision-making under pressure, self-confidence, and leadership. These qualities enabled him to step into civilian roles immediately and adapt to new challenges. His experience working alongside all three services gave him a broad understanding of defence operations, which he continues to apply in his current role.

Core Values and Skills
John continues to live by the Values and Standards instilled in him during his service: Integrity, Loyalty, Discipline, Courage (both physical and mental), Selfless Commitment, and Respect for others. These principles guide his work as a Business Framework Development Manager at Delkia, where his understanding of military structure and client expectations strengthens the organisation’s defence capabilities.

Advice to Fellow Veterans
John’s advice to veterans entering the civilian workforce is clear and motivational: “Set yourself goals. Be bold. Believe in yourself and don’t take things too personally. Never, ever, give up.”

Final Reflections
John recognises that military service brings unique experiences—both the highest highs and the lowest lows. While civilians may relate, only veterans truly share that deep understanding. He values the strength of the veteran community and was drawn to Delkia for the opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals. His personal motto reflects his approach to life and work:

“Every day is a school day. Take the opportunity to learn something new. Don’t dwell on what has been—I forgive my past, so I can move forward freely.”
