With a full semester completed and a series of merit and distinction grades already in the bank, we’ve asked them to reflect on their journey so far.
Elliot: I have completed three units so far: Business management, Engineering Science, Project design and Analytical methods which runs throughout the whole year.
Jack: I am in a different class to Elliot, so I do less units up front and more towards the end of the course. So far I have done: Measurement and Testing and Electrical/Electronic Principles.
How do you feel that the course has gone so far?
Jack: It’s gone well, I have either passed or received distinctions in my assignments and greatly increased my field of knowledge in electronic principles. I also achieved 83% in my Electronics exam. The most daunting part for me was going back to college after having a year out of it after my apprenticeship finished.
Elliot: Personally I think the course is going well so far, I had to really discipline myself because a lot of the work I complete at home but I am capable of researching. The most daunting part of the course so far has been the exams, but that’s just because I dislike the pressure of multiple assignments.
How do you think the HNC has helped you in your role at Delkia?
Elliot: This semester’s units have covered topics such as: company structures, managing quality, improving efficiencies and project controls; which I have found really interesting. In engineering science we have covered simple bending of beams, torsion in shafts, uniform linear motion and simple harmonic motion. So although they have not are things that I see every day in my role, I have found them interesting because I can still relate them to Delkia. The second semester will relate a lot more to my position due to the introduction of electrical subjects.
Jack: The course has directly related to my role as it has been 2/3 electrical based units. It has improved my electrical knowledge and has given me a greater understanding of jobs and systems I may be working on enabling me to have more independence when assigned with a job at work.
Reflecting on the course so far, what are you going to differently in the second semester?
Jack: I need to ensure that I make more notes and go into greater detail when taking them to assist me with my assignments.
Elliot: I need to manage my time better with assignments and take better notes.
Both Jack and Elliot have received some funding, from NSAN, towards their HNC tuition fees.
