A New Chapter for a Historic Unit

After more than a decade in temporary accommodation, the Whitehaven Sea Cadets are finally on the path to a permanent home.

Their new base at the Whitehaven Colliery Mission is undergoing vital refurbishment—thanks in part to a £600 donation from Delkia.

From Storms to Strength

The cadets’ original harbour-side barracks were damaged in 2013, forcing the unit to relocate. Since then, volunteers have worked tirelessly to secure funding and rebuild. So far, they've installed a new boiler, double glazing, and removed asbestos. But the journey isn’t over—electrical rewiring, a fire alarm system and a new roof are still needed.

“Each Sea Cadet unit is its own charity.

We rely entirely on fundraising and grants. The volunteers have been incredible.”

A Visit to Remember

Delkia’s support goes beyond funding. Commander Paul Blythe Royal Navy (Rtd), now Delkia’s Defence Strategy Director, visited the cadets in full uniform to present a Gold Burgee—an award celebrating the unit’s growth. He also shared stories from his 29-year naval career, inspiring cadets with tales of submarines, strategy and service.

“Organisations like the cadets give young people structure, confidence and leadership skills,” said Commander Blythe. “They deserve our support.”

Why This Matters

Delkia’s donation is part of a broader commitment to community impact. Earlier this year, the company supported mental health charity Growing Well and funded STEM learning in nine local primary schools.

“Sparking curiosity today builds the engineers of tomorrow,” said Delkia CEO Kurt Canfield.

“I was wholeheartedly impressed with how at ease Paul made the cadets feel and how he engaged them all with his presentation. Paul left a lasting impression and his contribution to the cadets is as valued as the much-appreciated donation that Delkia has made towards our unit refurbishment.”
