Steve Postlethwaite

Programme Director

Service Overview

Steve Postlethwaite served in the Royal Air Force for 22 years as an Aircraft Electrician. His extensive career took him to numerous RAF stations including Swinderby, Halton, Marham, Laarbruch, Brize Norton, Gutersloh, Coltishall, Mount Pleasant, Bruggen, Coningsby, and Leeming. Throughout his service, Steve worked in a variety of technical environments, from engine bays to mod teams, gaining a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of aircraft systems.

Inspiration to Join the RAF

Steve’s motivation to join the RAF was clear from the beginning—he wanted to fix planes. That passion for hands-on engineering and aviation technology guided his decision and sustained his enthusiasm throughout his military career.

Career Highlights and Memorable Moments

When reflecting on his time in service, Steve finds it hard to pinpoint just one standout moment. His career was filled with meaningful experiences, but what stands out most is the opportunity to travel the world. The variety of roles and locations added depth to his professional journey and left him with countless memories.

Transition to Civilian Life

Steve’s transition from military to civilian life was relatively seamless. He moved directly into a role supporting BOWMAN and operations in Afghanistan, continuing to work within the defence sector. This continuity allowed him to apply his military knowledge and skills immediately, making the shift feel more like a continuation than a complete change.

Applying Military Experience in Civilian Work

The values and discipline Steve developed in the RAF—such as drive, work ethic, and a commitment to high standards—have had a lasting impact on his civilian career. These qualities continue to shape the way he approaches his work today, particularly in high-pressure environments where reliability and precision are essential.

Core Values and Skills

Steve credits his military background for instilling in him a strong sense of responsibility, adaptability, and perseverance. These traits have proven invaluable in his post-service roles, helping him maintain focus and deliver results in complex technical settings.

Advice to Fellow Veterans

To other veterans making the transition to civilian life, Steve offers reassurance and practical advice: “You’ll be OK. Seek help with career transition and support groups. I didn’t have all that’s available now. Look to work with companies that are part of the Armed Forces Covenant.”

Final Reflections

Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges that leaving the military can feel daunting. “We did the job in the Services for the love of it—not just for the money. In civilian life, money becomes more of a factor, but if you accept that, you’ll be fine.” His story is a testament to the enduring value of military service and the strength veterans bring to every stage of their careers.
